The Yagua are an indigenous tribe in the Amazon basin along the Colombian & Peruvian border. This girl lives with her tribe in the Loreto province of northern Peru and is carrying her pet Brown Throated Three-Toed Sloth, named “Sandra”.
I was struck by her powerful, graceful pose with finger up, and intense stare contrasted by the relaxed, curious nature of the sloth and the fact that it was named with such incongruity to her language and culture.
The girl is endangered. The sloth is not.
