Much larger than a moose, the Irish Elk boasts the largest antlers of any deer species ever. It stook 7 feet tall at the shoulders and had antlers that spanned 12 feet.
It roamed Eurasia during the Pleistocene for 400,000 years until going extinct 8,000 years ago.
This piece represents how quarantine had affected me. I felt stranded in an endless cold & unforgiving wasteland. This elk is the last of his kind – alone – calling out in vain for companionship. I felt myself and my friendships vanishing. Each butterfly represents an irridescent friendship that has withered due to isolation. I still carry them with me in my mind and hopefully the friendship will emerge again.
The coloring and markings are based off of contemporary cave paintings
