A relative of the pigeon, the Dodo went extinct in 1690. Working its way from rumour to a cultural symbol of extinction, there are few depictions of it from life.

I based the coloring and shape off the only contemporary painting of a live Dodo by Ustad Mansur (a 17th century Mughal court painter under the reign of Jahangir who had a dodo in his menagerie.)

The White Dodo is a myth due to conflating it with the quasi-flightless White Ibis of Réunion Island.  All extant taxidermy is speculative artist recreation using goose or pigeon feathers.

The name “Dodo” possibly comes from the Dutch name for it: “Dodaars” meaning “fat ass”. Because of it’s flightless nature it’s weight was centered in the back (not requiring breast muscles for flight). The fatty meat made the animal taste bad, earning it another name; “Walghvoghel” or “Tasteless Bird”.

I feel sorry that every name we have for it derives from mocking it.
